Guitars – 6 string acoustics, electrics and basses as well as mandolins, banjos and a host of other plucked and strummed instruments – now enjoy an active collector’s market and, although prices may currently have fallen from their highs of a few years’ ago, buying smart and being prepared to wait can yield returns of well over 300% over 10 years (or considerably more if you’re Dave Gilmour).
For most players, listed guitars may be covered as part of a home contents insurance policy (but ALWAYS check) but for those with valuable instruments – such as vintage and rare Fender, Gibson, Gretsch, Rickenbacker and Martin guitars – as well as instrument collections, it will be vital to contact a specialist like Tollgate Private Clients insurance.
We can not only value your guitars correctly and assess their true replacement value, we can also ensure you find the best guitar collector’s policy.
Many collectors like to show and, indeed, play their instruments. Guitars and basses are things of beauty and purpose and should be seen and enjoyed. For that reason, owners and collectors need to make sure they are correctly covered for theft, damage and loss.
As a guitarist and, therefore, a lover of all-things-stringed I’m absolutely the wrong person to write about guitar collections (and insurance for guitars and guitar collections).
As soon as I started researching the topic of guitar and bass guitar collections I ended up staring at pictures at all sorts of amazing, rare and expensive instruments and some amazing specialist auctions!
If you have time, take a look at the Christie’s sale of Dave Gilmour’s (Pink Floyd in case you didn’t know…) guitar collection – sold for approaching £20,000,000 in 2019 (including a record $3,975,000 for his famous ‘Black Strat’)! A nice day’s work for Mr. Gilmour, especially since many of the instruments were probably given to him! But it was all for a very good cause.
On the eve of the sale David Gilmour announced on social media that proceeds would be donated to the charity, Client Earth. ‘The global climate crisis is the greatest challenge that humanity will ever face,’ he said, ‘and we are within a few years of the effects being irreversible.
Good for him.
Anyway. Enough ogling rock star’s guitars.
